THE OUTSIDERS for re-Nature festival
PolderSopropo, smaken en verhalen van de tropische kassen in Amsterdam West
Aan de rand van Amsterdam-West, om de hoek van Ruigoord, ingeklemd tussen havenkranen en snelwegen, ligt een onverwachte oase: een kas, met daaronder een volkstuin. De Wereld entesente Tuintjes. In deze kas heerst een tropisch klimaat, maar het is niet alleen de temperatuur die verwarmt. Hier tuinieren mensen met voorouders uit alle windstreken samen – Surinaamse, Arubaanse, Cubaanse, Nederlandse... Iedere plot is een verhaal. Iedere groente draagt een herinnering. En in de vochtige aarde groeien groenten waarvan je misschien nog nooit hebt gehoord.
Samen met hobbytuinders van deze kas schotelen wij op ReNature een proeverij voor voor al je zintuigen. Laat je verrassen door de bittere en pittige smaken van tropische groenten. Luister naar de verhalen van de mensen die deze groenten verbouwen, bereiden en verwerken. Reis mee langs de geschiedenis en het heden van de verschillende culturen en gerechten en wat het betekent om wortel te schieten.
Deze proeverij is onderdeel van ons project The Travelling Farm Museum, waarin kunstenaarscollectief The Outsiders de grenzen van de stad zoeken om de geschiedenis van de voormalige landbouwgebieden beter te begrijpen en actie te nemen in de steeds groeiende samenleving en zijn fysieke leefomgeving. We gebruiken kunst als medium om deze verhalen te ontsluiten: participatief onderzoek, performatieve tours en diners waarin we verhalen vertellen over het land. Hierbij vormen mobiele installaties, beeld, muziek, textielkunst en collectief koken de artistieke bouwstenen van ons werk.
Stichting The Outsiders is een interdisciplinair kunstenaarscollectief bestaande uit Asia Komarova, Merel Zwarts en Txell Blanco. Ze onderzoeken de relatie tussen natuur, landbouw en erfgoed in de stad. Met sociaal geëngageerde kunst en feministisch-ecologisch werk stimuleren zij de dialoog tussen boeren en stedelingen. Hun project The Travelling Farm Museum of Forgotten Skills verbindt vergeten kennis met nieuwe gemeenschappen.
In dit project werken The Outsiders samen met een aantal tuinders van de Wereld Groente Tuintjes. Voor de audioproductie werken ze samen met Maxim Yesodharan.

On the edge of Amsterdam-West, around the corner from Ruigoord, wedged between harbour cranes and highways, lies an unexpected oasis: a greenhouse with a community garden beneath it. De Wereld Groente Tuintjes. Inside this greenhouse a tropical climate reigns, but it’s not only the temperature that warms the space. Here, people with roots from all over the world garden side by side – Surinamese, Aruban, Cuban, Dutch... Every plot tells a story. Every vegetable carries a memory. And in the moist soil, crops grow that you may never have heard of.
Together with the hobby gardeners of this greenhouse, we present a tasting at RE_NATURE designed for all your senses. Be surprised by the bitter and spicy flavors of tropical vegetables. Listen to the stories of the people who cultivate, cook, and process them. Travel through the histories and presents of diverse cultures and cuisines, and discover what it means to take root.
This tasting is part of our project “The Travelling Farm Museum”, in which artist collective The Outsiders explores the edges of the city to better understand the history of former agricultural landscapes and to take action in the ever-growing society and its physical environment. We use art as a medium to unlock these stories: through participatory research, performative tours, and dinners where we share narratives of the land. Mobile installations, imagery, music, textile art, and collective cooking form the artistic building blocks of our work.
The Outsiders Foundation is an interdisciplinary artist collective consisting of Asia Komarova, Merel Zwarts, and Txell Blanco. They explore the relationship between nature, agriculture, and heritage in the urban context. Through socially engaged art and feminist- ecological practices, they stimulate dialogue between farmers and city dwellers. Their project, The Travelling Farm Museum of Forgotten Skills, reconnects forgotten knowledge with new communities.
For this project, The Outsiders collaborate with several gardeners from De Wereld Groente Tuintjes. For the audio production, they work together with Maxim Yesodharan.
